## Canonical thesis
A garment and its digital record are interdependent preservation systems: the object carries material evidence the file cannot feel, while the file carries context the object cannot state.

## Complete editorial sequence
A garment can survive after its pattern software, photographs, emails, or product database disappear. A file can survive after fabric degrades, components separate, or ownership changes. Smithsonian textile-conservation guidance addresses physical care; National Archives resources address electronic-record preservation. These are authoritative starting points in their domains, not individualized conservation instructions for a private collection.

The institutional unit is therefore the object–file relationship. Stable identifiers connect garment, components, labels, condition, dimensions, materials, pattern, construction records, images, rights, contributor accounts, loans, treatments, exhibitions, and digital derivatives. Access and privacy may require layers. Valuable or fragile textiles require a qualified conservator, while obsolete digital formats require migration planning and integrity checks.

### 01 · IDENTIFY — Can object and file find each other?
Assign stable identifiers to garment, component, container, digital folder, preservation copy, image, and related record; never rely on filename or shelf memory alone.

Evidence: PROPOSAL · S39, S41

### 02 · DESCRIBE — What evidence belongs to each medium?
Record physical material, construction, wear and condition separately from file provenance, format, metadata, rights, version, and fixity. Link without collapsing.

Evidence: INFERENCE · S42, S66

### 03 · CARE — What threatens survival?
Assess handling, light, pests, humidity, storage materials, damage, hardware, software, format, bit integrity, access, vendor, and backup with appropriate specialists.

Evidence: VERIFIED · S41, S42, S43, S66

### 04 · USE — How will access avoid harm?
Define handling, digitization, research, display, reproduction, privacy, cultural restriction, loan, treatment, and correction rules; record every intervention.

Evidence: PROPOSAL · S40, S42

## Counterargument
Digitization can create access while encouraging the fiction that the physical object has been preserved. Conservation can protect an object while making it inaccessible. Stewardship must negotiate both forms of loss.

## Reader fieldwork
1. Pair one garment with every known physical and digital relative.
2. Create identifiers and record missing connections.
3. Obtain conservation and digital-preservation risk assessments.
4. Test recovery from a preservation copy and retrieval from physical storage.

## External production dependencies
Recorded performance, bespoke RN photography, participant releases, and counsel or specialist review are separate human-led productions. The editorial edition does not present them as finished recordings, permissions, or professional opinions.
