## Canonical thesis
Provenance is future memory when it preserves a transparent chain of identity, custody, intervention, attribution, evidence, uncertainty, and rights—not merely a prestigious prior owner.

## Complete editorial sequence
A fashion object may move from wearer to family, collector, dealer, house, auction, museum, exhibition, borrower, researcher, and digital platform. At each move, labels may detach, components separate, dates shift, maker attributions change, images gain new licenses, and stories harden through repetition. Museum records demonstrate the value of identifiers, materials, dates, credits, and accession histories while also showing that cataloguing is revisable knowledge.

Trust does not require pretending the chain is complete. A responsible provenance record distinguishes documentary fact, physical observation, expert attribution, oral account, market claim, and unresolved gap. It records who made the statement, when, from what evidence, with what confidence, and who may correct it. For culturally sensitive, stolen, looted, contested, or privacy-laden material, possession and publication can raise questions that require specialist, community, and legal review.

Record stable identifier, components, marks, labels, measurements, materials, images, condition, alterations, and comparison basis; note uncertainty and separated parts.

Attach acquisition, gift, inheritance, loan, sale, deposit, return, location, responsible party, document, date, and restriction without inventing missing links.

Log repair, conservation, cleaning, alteration, reframing, digitization, renaming, reattribution, exhibition, reproduction, and metadata correction.

Label verified fact, physical observation, attributed conclusion, participant account, inference, disputed statement, and unresolved gap; retain earlier versions and correction history.

## Counterargument
Provenance can become a prestige narrative that launders gaps, excludes makers, or treats legal title as ethical legitimacy. Transparent uncertainty is stronger than a seamless but unsupported chain.

## Reader fieldwork
1. Assign one stable object and component identifier.
2. Reconstruct custody events from exact records.
3. Record every physical and descriptive intervention.
4. Submit cultural, title, theft, privacy, attribution, and jurisdiction concerns for specialist review.
