The Independent Designer’s Research Department

An independent designer can operate a rigorous research department by making questions, sources, permissions, interpretation, counterevidence, and retrieval part of the studio rhythm.

The proposition

Research is not a folder of references and rigor is not measured by scale. A one-person practice can distinguish source fact from visual inference, retain canonical records, record rights, invite specialist correction, and show how a source altered a design decision. Museum and archive portals such as the Ferré Research Center and V&A collections expand access, but online visibility does not grant reuse rights or cultural authority.

The independent research department is therefore a method rather than a room. It protects time for inquiry, makes uncertainty visible, prevents inspiration from becoming extraction, and returns findings to both design and archive. Its advantage is intimacy: the founder can connect a question directly to material experiments. Its risk is confirmation bias and undocumented browsing, which require explicit counterevidence and review.

The institutional sequence

01 · ASK

Can the question change the work?

Frame a bounded design or institutional question, a decision date, relevant communities, and evidence that would require revision. “Inspiration” is too broad to audit.

02 · SOURCE

Can each reference be recovered?

Preserve creator, title, date, institution, identifier, canonical URL, access date, rights statement, excerpt limits, and local notes. Keep link-only records visible without copying restricted media.

03 · INTERPRET

Where does fact end and judgment begin?

Write source description, studio inference, transformation, disagreement, and cultural-authority question in separate fields. This prevents an appealing object from being made to prove more than its record supports.

04 · RETURN

What did research change?

Attach the altered silhouette, material, process, refusal, claim, credit, or archive rule to the source trail. If nothing changed, record why the reference was rejected rather than laundering it into a mood board.

The Jeanne Hallée dress remains researchable through its museum record even though its house is less culturally prominent; the object demonstrates the power and limits of institutional description.

COUNTERPOINT

What this framework could get wrong

Formal research systems can privilege institutions that already catalogued their holdings and marginalize living, oral, community, or embodied knowledge. Rigor must include consent, compensation, cultural review, and the right not to extract—not only better metadata.

FIELDWORK

Do the work now

Use this as a working session, not a score.

  1. Choose one live studio question and define the revision condition.
  2. Create five exact source records and one counter-source.
  3. Separate observation, inference, proposed transformation, and permission.
  4. Document the design decision each retained or rejected source changed.

What the sources establish

A one-person practice can implement retrievable, rights-aware research without reproducing a conglomerate.
