How a Fashion House Transfers Tacit Knowledge
A house transfers tacit knowledge by pairing records with situated practice: demonstration, attempt, correction, comparison, narration, and trusted authority. The goal is not to extract every secret, but to preserve what collaborators may ethically carry.
Read the story00
The proposition
A technical file can specify measurement and material while failing to explain the practiced hand that senses tension, recognizes a wrong drape, or chooses when an exception protects the design. The surviving Worth ensemble makes that limitation concrete: the object holds evidence of material and construction but cannot replay the conversations and corrections that formed it.
FIT’s Patternmaking Department oral history preserves practitioner voices; UNESCO’s textile-safeguarding work documents knowledge transmission in specific communities; the Ferré Research Center organizes archival material for research. These sources support multiple transmission mechanisms, not one formula for every house.
01–04
The institutional sequence
01 · SHOW
What must be demonstrated?
Identify judgments that resist prose: hand position, tension, sequence, sound, resistance, drape, finishing threshold, and the moment an expert stops. Record only with informed permission.
Sources behind this section
An interpretation drawn from the linked records.
02 · TRY
Where does the learner practice?
Design a bounded attempt using sacrificial material, time for repetition, and permission to fail. Apprenticeship is labor and education; compensation, safety, access, and jurisdiction must be addressed.
Sources behind this section
An original working method informed by the linked records.
03 · CORRECT
How is judgment calibrated?
Preserve paired examples, expert commentary, acceptable variation, non-negotiable failure, and the reason for correction. Record disagreement instead of forcing false consensus.

04 · RETURN
Who retains authority over the knowledge?
Define consent, attribution, confidentiality, access, benefit, revocation, cultural authority, archive custody, and successor permissions. Not all knowledge should become a company asset or public lesson.

Ensemble
House of Worth · 1893 · Silk, jet, metal
The multi-part Worth ensemble preserves coordinated decisions across silk, jet, and metal. It shows what an object can carry—and what it cannot: the embodied judgments, demonstrations, corrections, and authority behind those decisions.

COUNTERPOINT
What this framework could get wrong
Documentation can democratize access, but it can also extract knowledge from workers and communities, freeze evolving practice, expose trade secrets, or privilege what a camera can capture. Ethical transfer includes the right not to record and the power to govern future use.
FIELDWORK
Do the work now
Use this as a working session, not a score.
- Ask a practitioner to identify one decision a specification cannot teach.
- With consent, record demonstration, learner attempt, correction, acceptable variation, and stop condition.
- Attach contributor, compensation, confidentiality, cultural-authority, access, archive, and revocation terms.
- Have the practitioner and, where appropriate, a cultural specialist approve the description before publication.
What the sources establish
FIT preserves an oral history of its Patternmaking Department, demonstrating that practitioner narration can become an institutional record.
UNESCO documents textile safeguarding through the transmission of knowledge and skills, while the Gianfranco Ferré Research Center organizes an archive for research and transmission.
Source note
Directly supported by the linked records.
Tacit knowledge requires situated demonstration, practice, correction, and trust in addition to files; the proper mix varies by house, craft, community, and jurisdiction.
