The Personal Archive as Succession Infrastructure
A personal archive becomes succession infrastructure when it preserves not only the work, but the founder’s decision logic, rights evidence, relationships, access pathways, and instructions for future interpretation.
Read the story00
The proposition
Files do not explain themselves. A sketch can show a line without explaining the rejected alternatives; a contact sheet can preserve images without recording the consent boundary; a password list can restore access without assigning authority. Personal archiving must begin while the founder can still narrate the decisions.
Library of Congress and NARA guidance supports a disciplined preservation spine: inventory, description, multiple copies, integrity checking, migration, and documentation. Those public standards do not decide a private fashion estate. They provide tested preservation practices that can be adapted, then joined to legal, conservation, tax, cultural, and organizational review.

The institutional sequence
01 · CAPTURE
What cannot be reconstructed later?
Record why a choice was made, who contributed, what failed, what remains sensitive, and which relationship holds tacit knowledge. Use audio when voice carries nuance the file cannot.

02 · PAIR
Can the physical and digital records find one another?
Pair garments, samples, notebooks, photographs, contracts, communications, and born-digital files through stable identifiers and relationship fields.

03 · PRESERVE
Will the record open and remain trustworthy?
Maintain master and backup copies, record checksums and formats, document transformations, migrate deliberately, and keep known gaps visible.
04 · AUTHORIZE
Who may act after absence?
Name stewards, alternates, access rules, privacy limits, conservation referrals, legal instruments, and a review process for loans, publication, licensing, interpretation, and disposal.

Fancy dress costume
House of Worth · ca. 1893 · Silk
The Worth costume survives with maker, date, medium, accession, donor credit, and an open image. It demonstrates what a durable public record can preserve, while leaving private decision context outside the object page.

COUNTERPOINT
What this framework could get wrong
A total archive can become surveillance of the founder, collaborators, family, workers, and communities. Preservation is not a command to keep or publish everything. Appraisal, consent, privacy, embargo, deletion, and culturally appropriate restriction belong inside succession design.
FIELDWORK
Do the work now
Use this as a working session, not a score.
- Complete a seven-day sample across work, communications, rights, relationships, credentials, objects, and oral history.
- Pair each physical object to its digital and documentary relatives.
- Create two verified copies and record format, checksum, location, and migration need.
- Take the authority map—not merely the boxes—to archivist, conservator, counsel, tax adviser, and successor as appropriate.
What the sources establish
The Library of Congress recommends inventory, organization, description, multiple copies, and ongoing management for personal digital archives.
NARA preservation guidance describes master and backup copies, integrity checking, migration, and documentation as components of long-term access.
A founder’s archive can support succession only when decision context, rights, access, and stewardship travel with the files and objects.
