The Cost of Link-Only Culture
Link-only publication can respect rights, but a culture whose evidence lives only behind unstable links inherits broken memory, platform power, and unequal access.
Read the story00
The proposition
Linking is often the responsible choice when media is copyrighted, context is incomplete, or permission is absent. This site uses link-only records deliberately. Yet links can rot, platforms can close, accounts can be suspended, embeds can change, geographic restrictions can appear, and accessible descriptions can disappear. The Library of Congress and National Archives preservation resources show why durable identifiers, inventories, formats, and managed copies matter even when their rules do not govern private fashion archives.
The institutional response is not indiscriminate downloading. It is a layered preservation decision: retain metadata and citations; capture permitted records and checksums; negotiate archive copies; preserve lawful excerpts; document the unavailable object; maintain replacement routes; and fund stewardship. When reuse is prohibited, a rich link-only record can still preserve creator, title, date, identifier, rights, relevance, and the reason the object was not copied.

The institutional sequence
01 · DEPEND
Which memory exists only elsewhere?
Inventory source URL, platform, account owner, identifier, format, access condition, geography, login, cost, rights, and evidence use.
Sources behind this section
An original working method informed by the linked records.
02 · PERMIT
What may lawfully be retained?
Separate public visibility, download ability, license, authorized embed, preservation copy, quotation, metadata, and link. Review contracts and jurisdiction where uncertain.
Sources behind this section
An interpretation drawn from the linked records.
03 · DESCRIBE
What survives without the media?
Write a faithful factual description, creator and institution credit, date, identifier, evidentiary relevance, rights status, and retrieval history without substituting invented imagery.

04 · RECOVER
What happens after failure?
Schedule link checks, preserve redirects and replacement records, document loss, contact stewards, update citations, and keep correction history.

COUNTERPOINT
What this framework could get wrong
Preservation rhetoric can become a justification for copying creators’ work without consent. Conversely, rights uncertainty can erase minoritized histories first. The response is resourced permission work, accurate metadata, lawful preservation, and transparent absence.
FIELDWORK
Do the work now
Use this as a working session, not a score.
- Identify every exhibition claim supported only by an external link.
- Classify permitted copy, embed, excerpt, metadata-only, link-only, and no-use.
- Create a faithful absent-object record for one restricted work.
- Break one test URL and perform the documented recovery route.
What the sources establish
Online visibility, permission to reuse, and preservation authority are separate questions.
