Continue the Method, Not the Motif
A house continues most convincingly when successors inherit ways of asking, testing, making, and refusing—not a requirement to reproduce familiar motifs.
Read the story00
The proposition
Succession discourse often asks whether a new collection “looks like” the founder. That test rewards quotation and surface recognition. Archives can support a deeper reading: patterns, rejected samples, fitting notes, research trails, correspondence, oral histories, and material experiments may reveal how decisions were made. The V&A’s designer collections and Ferré Research Center make methods researchable while their media remain governed by item-level rights.
Method is not neutral or singular. Founders contradict themselves, collaborators shape practice, commercial pressures alter decisions, and archives preserve some voices better than others. A successor must therefore encounter multiple records and dissent, distinguish durable values from period habits, and document how a new answer relates to an old question. Continuity becomes an accountable transformation rather than resemblance theater.

The institutional sequence
01 · QUESTION
Which problems animated the work?
Identify recurring questions about body, material, power, movement, labor, audience, technology, or refusal from dated records—not retrospective slogans.

02 · METHOD
How were answers tested?

What changes in the new context?
Name new bodies, materials, technologies, laws, workers, audiences, and cultural authorities; explain what the inherited method cannot answer unchanged.

04 · CITE
Can evolution show its lineage?
Attach source, interpretation, transformation, contributor, permission, dissent, and successor rationale so continuity is neither copy nor amnesia.

Ball gown
House of Worth; attributed to Charles Frederick Worth and Jean-Philippe Worth · 1895–1900 · Silk
The dual Worth attribution makes succession and interpretation visible while refusing a simple single-author story.

COUNTERPOINT
What this framework could get wrong
“Continue the method” can itself become founder worship or selective history. Methods may encode exclusion, unsafe labor, or outdated assumptions. Successors need permission to reject as well as inherit.
FIELDWORK
Do the work now
Use this as a working session, not a score.
- Choose one historic question supported by three records.
- Recover two methods and one contradiction.
- Translate the question for a changed body, material, or social context.
- Invite contributors and specialists to challenge the lineage claim.
What the sources establish
Archives can preserve evidence of method as well as motifs.

The dual designer attribution makes succession visible as an evidence question: house continuity does not erase uncertainty about individual authorship.
